A story with a happy ending to start the week off A story with a happy ending to start the week off on a positive note!

On Saturday we were at Vial camp cleaning around the jungle area. After returning to our warehouse we realised that we had lost one of the shovels we normally use when cleaning. We did not expect to find it again but today the lost shovel was returned to us!

Two members of our team were visiting Vial today when a woman approached them and started miming to explain that she had the shovel. She took them to her tent to show that she had found the shovel and kept it safe until we returned to Vial so she could give it back to our team.

This may not seem like a big deal - it was “only” a shovel after all! But we’re so thankful to this woman, and her actions were a wonderful reminder of the kindness and thoughtfulness that exists in this world but is so often overlooked.
We just want to take this opportunity to wish you We just want to take this opportunity to wish you the happiest of holidays!! However you are choosing to celebrate this year, we wish you all the best and are sending love, joy and peace your way. We want to say a huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers, incredible donors, and awesome organisations and individuals who have supported us this year. We know this year has been tough for everyone but we are so grateful and appreciative of the different ways everyone has shown up to help. As we reflect on this year and look forward to the next, we are reminded of the importance of solidarity, empathy and justice in these challenging times. Our hope is that one day we will not exist as an organisation because every refugee and asylum seeker is treated with kindness and dignity. Until such a day, we will be here with open arms. And we cannot do that without your help, so once again - thank you!
Our amazing volunteers! We are very happy to sha Our amazing volunteers!

We are very happy to share a picture of our wonderful team that has worked incrediblly hard during lockdown.

We have spent the last few weeks preparing clothes packs for our benificiaries in light of the upcoming cold winter months and have managed to distribute winter clothes to over 500 people! This has been a massive project and our team has worked very hard to make this happen despite the challenging circumstances.

Because Vial went into lock down we regret to announce that the Offene Arme Distribution Warehouse will be closed until the lock down is lifted, or we can find a safe and dignified way to distribute.

We will continue our work in the warehouse and prepare for an efficient distribution as soon as the OADW reopens.
We truly hope that we will soon be able to serve those living in Chios again.

A big thank you to all our donors and people who keep on supporting us during this difficult time!

At our apartment activities project, we facilitate At our apartment activities project, we facilitate creative projects and games to provide a space for residents to socialise and express themselves. This week, a man joined us and drew the above image - he told us that the darkness represents all the stress and hardships he has faced and still faces, and the candle represents our team, who provide a break from an often boring routine, and show our support for those seeking asylum in Chios. We have this image displayed in our warehouse, as a reminder to all of us that our work is meaningful and us being here is so important to those we serve 💙
Outgoing donations! We recently gave out 207 wome Outgoing donations!

We recently gave out 207 women shoes, 133 unisex shoes and 141 children shoes to Pampiraiki vWarehouse in Athens who will distribute them to different organisations.
This shows how important the incredible cooperation between different organisations around Greece is in order to help the most people.

Our volunteers have been working hard to thoroughly sort and size all the outgoing items which is indispensable for the further distribution.

So, a big thank you to our amazing volunteers, donors and supporters!
Outgoing donations! We recently gave out blankets Outgoing donations!

We recently gave out blankets, pillows and 1000 masks to the Organisation "IOM" that is responsible for the unaccompanied minors in Chios.

Apartment activities! Three times a week our team Apartment activities!

Three times a week our team has brought arts and crafts, games and other activities to the apartment blocks for their residents.
This has created a fun, social and creative atmosphere for everyone to participate in!
Last week we had great games of Irish snap and chess, as well as jewelry making and numerous paintings!

We look forward to holding many more activities in the weeks to come ❤️
Vial Cleaning! Our team returned to Vial cleaning Vial Cleaning!

Our team returned to Vial cleaning for the first time since lockdown. There had been a very large build up in rubbish at the camp during the lockdown.

Now Vial is out of lockdown we are able to return to our cleaning project. Our team will go once a week to clean the fields that surround the official camp boundaries.

Last Saturday our amazing volunteers did an incredible job to clear one of the fields that has a busy pathway running next to it.
The Open Arms Distribution Warehouse! We had our The Open Arms Distribution Warehouse!

We had our first week of the winter distribution at the OADW. It was a hugely successful week where we served 850 customers, who took a total of 11,465 items!

The number of customers was far more than we were expecting but our incredible volunteers adapted to manage the numbers and continue to provide a good service.

We will be postponing the distribution for one week. This is due to the huge numbers of people we served! We will use this time to sort incoming stock, to ensure we have the best quality items and change our appointments system to allow a more manageable flow of customers according to our incoming stock.

It has been a long week for our volunteers who worked really hard! So a huge thank you to all of our volunteers, as well as our donors and supporters who have helped make all of this happen. We are excited to reopen in one week to continue to winter distribution 💜
Apartment activities! Our team continues to atten Apartment activities!

Our team continues to attend apartment activities three times a week. We send a team of our volunteers to apartment blocks where they facilitate activities for the residents there.

This time provides an opportunity for apartment residents to socialise, be creative and meet new people!

The OADW is open!! We have started the winter dis The OADW is open!!

We have started the winter distribution. Our incredible team winterized the OADW in under a month meaning we have been able to start our winter distribution.

Refugees and asylum seekers on the island can book appointments to come and take clothes and hygiene products for free. During our winter distribution we have many warm clothes available including jumpers, coats, thermals and everyone can take a blanket. As well as these items, people can also take eight hygiene products!

None of this would be possible without our amazing supporters and donors so a HUGE thank you from Offene Arme to everyone who has supported us to make this distribution possible!
We must act now. Europe's largest refugee camp wa We must act now.

Europe's largest refugee camp was destroyed in a fire over a week ago. As an organisation, we formed to respond to an unimaginable crisis. It is now five years later and the situation in the Aegean is still at a point of crisis. People who came seeking safety now face the threat of COVID and a winter in tents.

Our incredible team!! We have been working really Our incredible team!!

We have been working really hard to get everything ready for the winter distribution that we hope to start as soon as possible!

Thanks to our incredible volunteers and their hard work, we will be able to start the winter distribution before winter starts. This is super important to ensure as many of our beneficiaries as possible have winter items in time for the cold weather.

None of this would be possible without our incredible donors and supporters as well, so a huge thank you to all our donors and supporters 💜❤️💜❤️💜❤️
There go our last customers!💙 We are thrilled t There go our last customers!💙 We are thrilled to announce that over the last 10 weeks we have been able to distribute 95789 summer items to 4655 asylum seekers and refugees living in Chios.
The team, made up of 30 different volunteers over this period, worked tirelessly to ensure that the service provided at the OADW were to the highest standard and that the experience for our shoppers was pleasant.
This has been the biggest distribution ever carried out by Offene Arme, and to have achieved this while in a global pandemic which restricted the travel of volunteers - resulting in a small team on the ground - is no small feat.
We could never have achieved this without the support of all our generous donors, who made it possible by sending us so many amazing supplies and financial support.

We will now begin preparing for WINTER! It gets incredibly cold in Chios, and we will be supplying much-needed warm clothes to our beneficiaries, and we need your help! Please donate via PayPal at: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/offenearme
We aim to have the distribution warehouse open again in the next few weeks!💙
This week we have started apartment activities! W This week we have started apartment activities!

We have spent the past two days focusing on making a space available for apartment residents to show their creativity.

We have carried out arts and crafts whilst getting feedback from the residents on what they would most like these sessions to be!

These are some of the creations we have seen the past couple of days 🙌
Our amazing team! It has been a great week for Of Our amazing team!

It has been a great week for Offene Arme as we are starting to have more volunteers join us! Their hard work and commitment has allowed us to not only have more people helping at our project, The O.A. Distribution Warehouse, but also to have more people helping in the main warehouse. This has meant we have been more efficient and able to provide better customer service at the OADW and sort out many tasks at the main warehouse.

With the increase in volunteers, we are also hoping to increase our opening hours and appointments at the OADW so we can serve more beneficiaries each week!

If you would like to join our team, please email us at cesrt@offenearme.org and we will get back to you with information on volunteering as quickly as we can!

A huge thank you to everyone for their ongoing support! 💜
Again this week our main activities have been at t Again this week our main activities have been at the OADW where we have managed to add a further 409 beneficiaries in 4 days, taking the total number of people we have served to 1807. We have now been open for 26 days and the statistics are very similar to last week, with 27% of the people we have served under the age of 14. We have given out a massive 44780 items, including towels, underwear, socks, shoes and hygiene kits.

We try to have 6 volunteers working at the OADW most days which means each person gives out an average of 287 items each day. They are working so hard! This is the biggest distribution that Offene Arme e.V have done!!

Our most popular item is still men’s T-shirts. Men’s bags all look very similar in terms of what they choose to take, but women and girls take a much greater variety of items which include abayas, dashikis, hijabs, dresses, trousers, leggings and joggers; alongside short and long sleeved tops. Most days it is now 30 degrees or above which means that cool, comfortable and modest clothing is essential.

Children still continue to draw while waiting to go inside. On today's post you can see one of the more poignant drawings.
